How the Mighty Fall

Northies,

By industry standards, or by their definition, whatever that may be, we seem “successful”. That’s nice and all, but I want to be careful. In his book, “How the Mighty Fall”, Jim Collins says step one in that decline is, “Hubris Born of Success.” This kicks in when people become arrogant, regarding success virtually as an entitlement, and they lose sight of the true underlying factors that created success in the first place.

We must not fall victim to hubris. If in any way, you have allowed hubris to sink into your life and work, please join me in being reminded of these scriptures:

  • Proverbs 16:18, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling.”

  • Romans 12:16, “Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.”

  • Proverbs 11:2, “When pride comes, then comes dishonor, but with the humble is wisdom.”

Jesus Christ, the most powerful man ever to walk on the face of the earth was also the most humble man who ever lived. His agenda was never to promote himself, but to please his Father by loving and serving others. May we continue to follow his example as we remember that our blessings are from God.
